What is a URL?

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is human readable text which was designed to replace IP address that computers use to communicate with the server.
Example:
http://www.abc.com

Here are the Tips for URL Optimization 

Use Hyphens
Use hyphens to separate the words for readability, and one more thing that search Engine crawler can’t understand underscores “_”. So don’t use any spaces, underscores or any other characters. Use hyphens in a limit. Overuse of hyphens can make you spammy.
Google consider underscore words to a single word. Crawler consider mens_product_shop to mensproductshop.

Character Limit
URL no longer then 2000 Character

Descriptive and Readable URL
Search Engine spider read URL so URL must be descriptive, readable and relevant to pages.
Example:
http://flipcats.com/pro=525?category=25
http://snapdeal.com/shop/mens/shoes/nike
the above two example first example user not understand what the URL points to and send one url is easily understand by user.

Use Static URL
Use static url as possible as and keep Dynamic URL less. Reason behind the use of static URLs that are static url contain keywords and more user friendly. Also, anyone can figure out what the page is about by looking the static url. Dynamic url increases the chances of duplicate content.

Targeted Keywords
Use Targeted Keywords in URL. It will definitely helps to rank in SERP.
Put top content in root folder

Use small letter
Use only small letters in the URL. Search Engine spider understands capital and small letter are two different things. And if you use capital and small letter, then it will create confusion for spider. Example: Abc.com/About-Products and abc.com/about-products are two different urls.

Canonical URL
Duplicate content URL should have Canonical URL specified for them.

www or non www version
ww and non www are two versions of the website so preferred only one version www or without www. Search Engine Crawlers understand that website has two different URLs, but user point of view they are only one url. And in this situation crawler consider them duplicate content.
Example:
www.abc.com and abc.com are two different version of website. Both url have same content. So spider considers them duplicate content.
There are two ways to resolve this issue, one is use 301 redirect and second is canonical url

Mobile Friendly URL
Google now gives priority to the mobile friendly website. So if the website has a mobile friendly url then it will be helping to rank in search Engine ranking Page.
